広島大学歯学部は昭和４０年（１９６５年）の創立から本年度で４０周年を迎えることとなりました。２０世紀後半から２１世紀にかけて，歯科医療を取り巻く環境，さらに国立大学を取り巻く環境は激しく変化いたしました。広島大学内にありましても，大学院医歯薬学総合研究科の設立，歯学部附属病院と医学部附属病院との統合，国立大学の法人化など，歯学の教育・研究・臨床を取り巻く環境は激変いたしました。
このような改革の中にあって，広島大学歯学部は平成１２年に歯学科にコース制（最先端歯学研究コース，臨床歯科医学コース）を導入し，基礎歯学を基盤とした教育の充実を図って参りました。また，今年度から口腔保健学科（口腔保健衛生学専攻と口腔保健工学専攻）を設置し，歯科衛生士，歯科技工士の教育に教養教育の充実と研究能力の開発を加えることによって，両分野の教育者・研究者の育成を積極的に展開しております。
学内外の競争的環境が厳しくなる中，広島大学歯学部は創立４０周年を記念して，国内外の著名な教育者・研究者をお招きして，広く，歯学教育あるいは医学・歯科医学を議論し，今後の歯科医学教育・研究の尚一層の発展の一助としたいと考えております。
