Research Title: "Molecular Biological Studies on Cellular Functions of Ca2+ Signaling in Yeast"
In his research on a model organism yeast, Prof. Miyakawa found the genes encoding "calcineurin", an enzyme important for Ca2+ signaling in human brain and immune systems, and clarified its various physiological functions in yeast. This research was highly evaluated especially for discovering how the Ca2+ signal regulates cell cycle, elucidating a mechanism by which highly conserved molecules regulate cell cycle and applying the reseach achievement to the screening of potential medicinal drug seeds.
