Human cultures have been preserved in the form of literature, languages, art, music, relics, and heritage. Those legacies tell us what human beings have been thinking, what our predecessors have endeavored to do for themselves, and how they have survived. The study of the humanities will encourage us to face those questions through exploring the ancestral legacies which are transmitted from generation to generation.
The Faculty of Letters has produced many great achievements in each field of philosophy, history, and literature which form the humanities. In addition to those accumulated results of research, our Faculty possesses rich documentary records and world class artifacts. Those valuable items await your study. You will succeed in obtaining great accomplishments with those reliable materials.
From a life-long perspective, the graduation thesis will enlighten your vision for life. All the studies in the Faculty are closely related to your thesis and offer sufficient academic knowledge, various skills in investigating materials, logical thinking, and language expressions. We investigate the past in order to deepen our understanding of the present and create the future. In the 21st Century, the raison d’être of the humanities will depend on a deep understanding of the present questions and become a medium for the orientation toward our future through the profound insight, which is based on a deep respect for past wisdom and tradition. This is our ultimate aim in studying the humanities.
If you are eager to create new humanities for the 21st Century, four years in the undergraduate school might not be enough time to gain a universal knowledge. If you feel a strong need for further study, we will welcome you at the Graduate School of Letters, which boasts one of the leading research and educational facilities in Japan.
