Please refer to the attached documents for details.

 Introduction

This international symposium began as the Hiroshima Conference on Education and Science in Dentistry, held to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Faculty of Dentistry in January 2006. At this symposium, cutting-edge research presentations and active discussions were held as to the future of dental research and education in the 21st Century and participants shared the ideal direction for future dental medicine and oral health science practitioners, researchers, and students. Deans and Vice Deans from 9 HU-academic exchange agreement Faculties of Dentistry were in attendance, and together with academic exchanges, a Dean’s Meeting was held during the conference to discuss future cooperation.
In October 2007, the 2nd symposium was held. Lectures by leading researchers and discussions were held on 5 focal points closely linked to dental medicine (Integration of Engineering and Health Science, Infection Control of Emerging and Reemerging Infectious Diseases, Neuroscience on Growth and Development, Nutrition and Diseases, Innovation of Education for Oral Health Science). At the same seminar, the Hiroshima Seminar for Asian Dental Students was held, where 18 undergraduate and graduate students from 8 countries and 1 region discussed the issues and nature of dental medicine in Asia, as well as contributions to peace with the deans and faculty of academic agreement universities. It is worth mentioning that several of the students who participated in this symposium were later awarded the IADR Hatton Award.
Since its founding in 1965, the HU Faculty of Dentistry has strived to produce leaders in dental medicine, education, and medical care, together with firmly maintaining its position as an educational institution for those pursuing dental medicine and building an increasingly advanced educational system for them. However, the environment surrounding dental education, research, and clinical practice has changed dramatically with changes to the dental medicine environment as well as national university circumstances and changes within Hiroshima University due to the founding of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the integration of the University Dental Hospital and University Medical Hospital, and the privatization of national universities.  In these circumstances, the Faculty of Dentistry introduced a course system in 2000 consisting of two independent courses (Course for Frontier Dental Science and Course for Clinical Dental Science) in an effort to strengthen its education based on fundamental dentistry. In 2005, the School of Oral Health Science was established (renamed the Faculty of Oral Health Science in April 2009). The School is actively involved in cultivating educators and researchers in both areas of the subject, and with the goal of educating advanced medical personnel highly specialized in dental health, as well as educators and researchers in oral health and oral engineering, the Oral Health Sciences course (Master’s course) was established in April this year.

The 3rd Hiroshima Conference will take place on November 7 and 8 at the International Conference Center Hiroshima. This year’s conference will be held as part of the HU 60th anniversary events, and includes research presentations from the graduate school GP “Graduate Program for BioDental Education” and “Liaison Studies for Improvement of QOL through Oral Health” taking place at the faculty of dentistry in national universities across Japan. As a continuation of the 28th Japanese Dental Association Meeting, which will be held one day prior to the symposium, the contents of this year’s symposium will be the shape of frontier dental science to come such as the nature of dental medical education in globalization and regenerative medicine. Deans, faculty, and students from approximately 20 countries on the Pacific Rim are set to participate this year with contents which are of interest to dental medical professionals, graduate and undergraduate students alike and provide the opportunity for all to consider the nature of future dental medicine and care as well as oral health sciences. I encourage you to join us in participating, and very much look forward to seeing you at the symposium.
