Welcome to the Website of the Graduate School of Biosphere Science, Hiroshima University

"Consider Studying Biosphere Science"
The recent expansion of population and impact of human activities have resulted in increasing burden on the global environment. Unless we solve the three major problems of food, energy and environment by the mid-twenty-first century, the existence of various life-forms including human beings will be at risk. In the Graduate School of Biosphere Science, we conduct educational research to strengthen biological functions, increase biological production, and harmonize human activities and the natural environment by scientifically elucidating life phenomena with the philosophy of sustainable food production and environmental protection.

The academic system of the Graduate School of Biosphere Science includes interdisciplinary and integrated academic fields such as environmental science, regional study, economics, and international partnerships based on life science. Thus, the content of our study changes according to the social climate, social needs, etc. and is very practical and applicable. You can see what we are doing from the Profiles of Faculty and Research Scholars in Hiroshima University on our website.

The educational system of the Graduate School of Biosphere Science has the following characteristics: the full-time teachers are from the Faculty of Applied Biological Science and the Faculty of Integrated Arts and Sciences, and its educational activities are conducted in cooperation with outside independent administrative research institutions such as the National Research Institute of Brewing, the National Agriculture and Food  Research Organization (the Agriculture Research Center for Western Region and the National Research Institute of Fisheries and Environment of Inland Sea, Fisheries Research Agency) and the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology. Students can improve their abilities concerning practice and application through educational research activities in cooperation with these institutions.

Enrolled at the Graduate School of Biosphere Science are students who graduated from undergraduate studies not only at Hiroshima University but also other universities, working students and overseas students. To enhance educational effects for such a variety of graduate students, we provide not only two-unit classes in an ordinary two-semester system, but also one-unit classes in a half-semester system, which have doubled. Furthermore, practical and cutting-edge experimental training and exercises and joint seminars with other graduate schools are available here. In addition, various kinds of support such as specialized basic education conducted in English and research paper correction by foreign faculty members, e-learning of foreign languages and support for attendance at international academic conferences are provided to help our students to gain an international level of sophistication.

The improved curriculum enables students to take classes according to their background, interest and future plan and provide opportunities now to gain wider and more integrated knowledge and vision as well as in a specialized and segmented way. Although it is important to deepen one’s focus by obtaining specialized knowledge and skills, comprehensive vision and abilities of application and further development are also required by society.

Learning is similar to mountain climbing. People climb mountains because they love to do so, even though they have to go through a lot of difficulties. Ultimately, only people who have reached the summit can savor the enjoyment and satisfaction of accomplishing their purpose. Many routes lead to the mountaintops and there are many experienced instructors who can guide you in the Graduate School of Biosphere Science. Why don’t you aim to reach your goals with us!
