I came to Japan in April 2003 with zero knowledge of the Japanese language. I was enrolled at the Japanese intensive course program which lasted six months. This was all I needed to begin an interactive life in Japan. Majority of the Japanese people are so friendly and loving, though language barrier do create uneasiness sometimes, but once overcome you are in a world of superb experience.

I graduated as a Food Scientist from the Federal University of Technology, Akure in Nigeria. On getting to Japan for my graduate studies, my specialization changed as I was enrolled in the Graduate School of Biosphere Sciences majoring on Enzyme Chemistry. It was quite challenging at the beginning as I came to realize that my six-month Japanese language was not enough. Having an understanding professor and good mentors in the laboratory made my research life an enjoyable one. Working in an environment with cutting-edge technology, super-standard laboratory, state-of-the-art techniques and ultramodern libraries have all influenced my knowledge and skill greatly in molecular biology. I am enthusiastic about the prospect of the discipline I am in, and I really appreciate Professor Muneharu Esaka for been a great supervisor and mentor to me.

Social life in Japan is a world of adventure as the campuses provide one with cross-cultural relationships. The university authority actively encourages socio-cultural interaction by the annual university festivals and international parties. Before coming to Japan, as a Christian, my fear has been how to find a place to fellowship since the predominant religions in Japan does not include Christianity, but to my surprise having a place to fellowship has never been a problem, irrespective of your religion. Interacting with people from different parts of the globe, relating with the young and old Japanese and at the same time studying has been an excellent experience for me.
For those aspiring to go to graduate school and those still contemplating on the location, I strongly recommend Hiroshima University in Japan for an experience with meaning.
Thank you.
