NEW MOA SIGNED BETWEEN VISAYAS STATE UNIVERSITY AND
THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BIOSPHERE SCIENCE

The memorandum of agreement (MOA) for academic and educational exchange was signed between the Graduate School of Biosphere Science, Hiroshima University and the College of Agriculture, Visayas State University (VSU) on December 9th, 2011. A small delegation from the Graduate School of Biosphere Science led by Dean Muneharu Esaka traveled to VSU in Baybay City, Philippines to formalize the academic linkage between the two institutions. Other members of the delegation included Dr Teruo Maeda, Vice Dean for International Affairs, Ms. Hisae Murakami, administrative assistant and Dr Lawrence M. Liao, associate professor (special appointment).

The MOA signing ceremony was attended by members of the VSU academic and research community and was witnessed by Mrs. Carmen L. Cari, the Mayor of Baybay City. An informative video on Hiroshima University was also shown during the ceremony, and followed by a short cultural dance presentation of the VSU Dance Troupe. In the afternoon, the Hiroshima University delegation was taken on a comprehensive VSU campus tour that included visits to the Philippine Carabao Center, Food Science processing plant, Regional Coconut Research Center, Philippine Root Crop Research and Training Center, National Abaca Research Center, tissue culture facilities of the Department of Horticulture, among others.

VSU is among the top three science and technology state universities of the Philippines founded in 1924, and recognized as a Center of Excellence in Agriculture by the Philippine Commission on Higher Education, the government agency overseeing all tertiary institutions.  The campus is more than 1,000 hectares set against the background of Mount Pangasugan and facing the Camotes Sea on the historic island of Leyte in central Philippines. The College of Agriculture is the largest and oldest academic unit of VSU, with seven departments namely, Animal Science, Horticulture, Agronomy and Soil Science, Food Science and Technology, Pest Management, Plant Breeding and Genetics and Development Communications. It is headed by the Dean, Dr Victor B. Asio who is a pedologist and a geo-ecologist trained in Germany. The College of Agriculture offers graduate and undergraduate programs in animal science, entomology, horticulture, plant pathology, soil science, weed science, food science and technology and agricultural economics and extension.

The new MOA is the 12th such academic linkage signed by the Graduate School of Biosphere Science with different foreign institutions, and the first MOA with a Philippine-based institution. Previously, the Graduate School has signed MOAs with schools in Australia, Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam. It is hoped that the new MOA will promote further understanding and exchanges for our mutual benefit in the coming years.
