Advice for Finding a Room

There are roughly 8,000 apartments under management in Higashi-Hiroshima City designated by the University for student accommodation.

There are many ways to find an apartment, such as taking over an apartment from a graduating student or through the Co-op, or a real estate agency in the city. As there are many apartments available, you should give careful consideration to the financials, the surrounding environment, the availability of transportation, and other factors before making a decision.

There are also copies of apartment information magazines in the lobby of the Student Support Center.

For New Students Looking for an Apartment in Higashi-Hiroshima

The University makes a list of available apartments every March (available at the Student Union) with the cooperation of the Aki/Kamo Office of the Hiroshima Real Estate Dealers Association, a member of the Hiroshima Office of the All Japan Real Estate Federation, and the Hiroshima University Co-op. (See Designated Apartment Listings below for details.)

Accommodation Overview

Most of the apartments available for students in Higashi-Hiroshima City are 1K (a single room and a kitchen) or 1DK (a single room with a kitchen/dining area) apartments with a bath, toilet, and air conditioning (with some exceptions). Rooms are 6 (about 10 m2) to 10 tatami mats in size (about 16.5 m2) and rents range from 25,000 yen to 45,000 yen/month.

In Hiroshima City, the rent for a 1K or 1DK apartment with a 6 to 8 tatami mat (about 13 m2) room, kitchen, bath, toilet and air conditioning (with some exceptions) can range widely from 30,000 yen to 80,000 yen. There are no accommodations that include meals in either of the two cities.

Expenses When Signing a Rental Contract

Deposit: The typical rate is equivalent to two or three month's rent (for Higashi-Hiroshima)

Placement fee: The typical rate is equivalent to one month's rent (less than 80% of the rent is charged for apartments designated by the University)

Three rules to follow when choosing an apartment:

1. Be sure to take the financials into consideration and make a choice you can afford.
2. Give careful consideration to the surrounding environment and the availability of transportation.
3. There are many apartments available in the city. Take your time and choose carefully.
