Student Health Insurance Association
The Health Insurance System

The Hiroshima University Student Health Insurance Association exists as a mutual aid system whereby all students on campus mutually help one another to provide relief and support to students who are financially troubled and unable to recover under the heavy burden of medical fees from an illness or injury sustained as an enrolled student.

Student Health Insurance Outline

(1) Members
Students at HU become members when they are admitted to the university. However, if students do not pay the set membership fees, they will be ineligible to receive medical payment benefits from the Association.
The Association is not affiliated with any other private insurance systems solicited on campus.

(2) Membership Fee
The membership fees can be found below, listed in order of time spent (time it takes to graduate) in each faculty (graduate school) [2,500 yen/year x years required for graduation].

(3) Medical Benefits (details can be found in the Association Rules)
When receiving treatment at general medical institution, health insurance will cover 70% of the medical exam fee, and the student shall cover the remaining 30%. Medical Benefit Funds shall be calculated as 70% (rounding to the nearest 10 yen) of the total medical expenses paid per month minus 1,000 yen. However, should the amount of medical expenses be less than 1,000 yen, no benefits will be provided (refer to the Calculation Method **Calculation methods for medical fees as of April 2004 have changed).

The largest amount of benefit which students are eligible for is 50,000 yen, including dental (benefit limit for dental is 5,000 yen).
We will provide dental benefits, so please claim your visits.

Confirming Membership

For those who may be unsure as to their membership status, either check the Insurance Membership information on Momiji, or confirm your membership with the Person in Charge of Student Insurance in the Financial Support Group of the General Student Support Center or at your Student Support Office in your faculty or graduate school.

How to Claim Medical Benefit Funds

First, please check if you are enrolled in the system. Benefits shall not be paid to non-members. For those not enrolled, the enrollment period is in April every year, so please transfer the amount for the years until graduation (however, the enrollment period for students admitted in October is in October).

(1) Please claim your visit on a monthly basis (for example, if your examination was in April, please claim it in May).

(2) Claim Forms ("Medical Examination Remuneration Certificate/Medical Benefit Funds Claim Form") are available with the Person in Charge of Student Insurance in the Financial Support Group of the General Student Support Center or at your Student Support Office in your faculty or graduate school.

(3) Have the medical institution fill out the Medical Examination Remuneration Certificate, and fill out the Medical Benefit Funds Claim Form yourself, then...

- For Higashi-Hiroshima students, take it to the Person in Charge of Student Insurance in the Financial Support Group of the General Student Support Center

- For Kasumi Campus students, take it to the Student Support Office of the Graduate School of Biomedical Science

- For Higashi-Senda students, take it to the Higashi-Senda Student Support Office

*Instead of having the medical institution fill out the form, you can make a claim by attaching a receipt which has the following items specified:
- The name of the examination recipient

- Date of the exam or the number of days spent under examination (hospitalized)

- The receipt stamp of the medical institution

- The amount to be paid by the student and insurance points for examination

- Receipt amount

Midway Enrollment

Beginning in 2004, sophomore students and above became eligible for midway enrollment.
The enrollment period for students admitted in April is through April, for students admitted in October, through October. By paying 2,500 yen multiplied by the number of years left until graduation, students can enroll in the Association. Please ask the Person in Charge of Insurance in the General Student Support Center for payment forms necessary for enrollment.
Ex) A sophomore in the Faculty of Letters has 3 years remaining until graduation, thus their enrollment fees come to 7,500 yen.
