European and American Literature and Language/Linguistics, Humanities, Faculty of Letters

Program Period: Long or Short-term

Destination: UK, Switzerland, Austria, etc

Program Outline: This half-year (20 week) sophomore- level (2nd year) program in the field of English Language and Culture at England’s University of Exeter, and other universities in the UK, was implemented in 2001. In the Faculty of Letters, individual lanagueg training in English as well as German, French, etc, can also be counted for credit depending on the hours studied.

Study Abroad/Training Program in the UK

Graduate School: The Graduate School of Education

Target Students:

nd year students in the Department of English Language and Culture Education, Faculty of Education

Program Period:
April 1- September 30 (16 weeks)

Destination: UK

Program Outline:
This program is aimed at sophomore-level (2nd year) students enrolled in the Faculty of Education’s English Language and Culture Course. Through allowing students to experience a different culture in England, improving everyday practical English fluency, and widely gain knowledge about English culture, the program itself aims at the cultivation of English-language faculty able to meet modern international and informational demands by honing students’ qualifications. Students take courses established at English universities (University of Edinburgh or Warwick University) and receive 13 Faculty of Education or related faculty-approved credits towards graduation. This system was designed not to hinder student graduation on account of study abroad.

Destination: The United States of America

Program Outline: This program conducts study abroad courses through multi-university exchange agreements among 3 universities in North Carolina, HU, Osaka Kyoiku University, and Naruto University of Education. HU plans to conduct a study abroad course at East Caroline University, North Carolina State University, Wilmington, and Western Carolina University through arrangements made by Osaka Kyoiku University.

Destination: UK

Program Outline:
Students learn English for approximately one month  at the University of Exeter while on
a homestay. At the historical University of Exeter, students will take courses from an expert staff. Students will also participate in activities outside of their courses, such as field trips into the city, etc. This program can also be used to gain credit for the liberal arts course "English-language Field Research" which can be taken by any student, regardless of academic year, and can also be taken as a specialized education course in the Faculty of Letters. For details, please check with the course standards for your faculty/graduate school. Each week, a Japanese coordinator runs a Help Desk in Exeter, so students have no need to worry.

English + ALOHA Program

Faculty: The International Planning and Cooperation Group (Academic Office); The Institute for Foreign Language Research and Education 

Program Period: 3 weeks


Destination: The United States of America (Hawaii)

Program Outline: Together with learning English, participants take specialized courses at the university to gain the skills necessary to create a foundation for being successful in English. Participants learn through language research and actual usage for 3 weeks at the world-famous University of Hawaii, Manoa.

Capital Normal University Chinese Language Program

Faculty: The Hiroshima University Beijing Research Center; The International Center 

Program Period: 3 weeks

Destination: China

Program Outline:
  Using 3 weeks of summer vacation, students take Chinese language courses at Capital Normal University (CNU) in Beijing, China. Students not only learn Chinese, but have the chance to learn about Chinese history and culture by visiting the National Palace Museum, the Great Wall of China, and seeing Chinese Opera. The program includes chances to meet with Chinese students as well. HU and CNU are university exchange agreement partners, and HU's Beijing Research Center is located in CNU's Graduate School of International Culture, so even first-time students can feel at ease during this program.
