Executive Okamoto (L) and Chairman Onishi (R) with the Center Signboard
Location: São Paulo, Brazil
On April 27, the Hiroshima University Brazil Center was established in the Hiroshima Culture Center in São Paolo City, Brazil. This is the 4th overseas education and research base to be established following centers in China, Russia, and Kenya.
On the occasion of the opening of the Center, Dr. Tetsuji Okamoto, Executive of Hiroshima University, and Mr. Hiromi Onishi, Chairman of Hiroshima-kenjin Kai (an association of immigrants from Hiroshima in Brazil), placed the official signboard up after the signing of an agreement about the establishment of the Center.
After the signature ceremony, reports about the establishment of the Center was made to the Consulate General Kazuaki Obe of the Consulate-General of Japan in São Paolo, who said that he hoped this Center will serve as a bridge between Japan and Brazil for academic and education exchange.
Upon their visit to the University of São Paolo (USP), a meeting was held with Provosts Armando Corbani Ferraz (in charge of the Graduate School) and Mayana Zatz (in charge of Research) about the future academic and education exchanges between HU and USP.
HU has until now admitted many international students and trainees from Brazil through the Hiroshima Prefecture-Sponsored International Student Program and the JICA Training Program for Japanese-Brazilians. However, through this Center, it is hoped that education and research exchanges will increase through the acceptance of even more students from Brazil and from around Central South America to HU, the establishment of further researcher exchanges, and other cooperative activities.
