Summary

The Short-term Study Abroad Promotion System (Dispatch) is a system which supports students sent to study abroad based on university agreements for student exchange with universities abroad for more than 3 months and less than a year while still enrolled at Hiroshima University.

The Short-term Study Abroad Program is a
system based on university exchange agreements which aims to provide learning, experiencing foreign culture, and language immersion for undergraduate/graduate students, who retain their enrollment at their home universities. Generally students spend 1-year or less (1 semester or multiple semesters) studying, gaining credit, or receiving research guidance at their host university. Since 2002, HU has been participating in the University Study Abroad Consortium (USAC), a new type of study abroad program. Currently 35 universities in 24 countries offer summer intensive courses and 1 semester/1 year study abroad programs, however of those universities, those able to send students to HU are 27 universities in 20 countries. The exchange programs listed above are systems with mutual waiver of tuition fees and approved credit exchange prerequisites.

The Hiroshima University Long-term Study Abroad Support Program, through sending students abroad long-term and gain degrees or undertake survey research in specialized areas at graduate schools abroad with government funds, aims to foster international human resources with the ability to be active in international society of tomorrow. The program also aims for the improved universal applicability of HU education and strengthened ability to compete internationally.

Summary

This half-year (20 week) sophomore-
level program in the field of English Language and Culture at England’s University of Exeter, and other universities, was implemented in 2002 was designed to allow participating students to graduate from HU’s English Education program within the standard 4 years. In the Faculty of Letters, student’s individual study of languages other than English, such as German or French, can be counted for credit based on the hours spent studying.

This program is aimed at sophomore-
level students enrolled in the Faculty of Education’s English Language and Culture Course. Through allowing students to experience a different culture in England, improving everyday practical English fluency, and widely gain knowledge about English culture, the program itself aims at the cultivation of English-language faculty able to meet modern international and informational demands by honing students’ qualifications. Students take courses established at English universities (University of Edinburgh or Warwick University) and receive Faculty of Education or related faculty-approved credit towards graduation. This system was designed not to hinder student graduation on account of study abroad.

This program aims at cross-cultural understanding and improvement of practical English-language ability by conducting a short-term (1 month) study abroad at a language school affiliated with England’s Leeds Metropolitan University during summer vacation. Student lodging will be provided via homestays (tentative). Students will receive a Course Completion Certificate. The explanatory meeting for this training program will be held in early April, so students who would like to participate should pay close attention to the Faculty of Education bulletin board. Students who have participated in this program have gained 1 recognized credit for their core English “English-speaking Country Field Research” course in addition to the credit for this course, “English-speaking Country Field Research 1.” For details, please inquire with the professor in charge.

The goal of the program is to cultivate technicians with ethical and international viewpoints, especially towards Asian countries, who will become the bearers of the 21st Century and the next generation of technicians.
Through this program approximately 10 graduate students with interests in the issues in Asian countries or the regional transfer of technology are sent to Japanese industry factories or administrative offices in Asia.
