With the accident at the Fukushima #1Nuclear Power Plant and the resulting influence from the halt of nuclear energy production within the country, this summer we are facing another electric power shortage. Nationwide, energy saving work such as electric-power conservation is being implemented, and at Hiroshima University as well our members are working together on energy saving measures. On this page, we introduce the electric-power conservation measures (including schedules) that this university will focus on. If all members (about 20,000 people) personally participate we can expect a significant impact.

○Cool Biz Enforcement
○Peak Cuts(※)
・Electric power conservation when there is the possibility of exceeding the contracted electric power amount.
・During last year’s peak power reduction, we were able to reduce the electric power contract from 10,800kw to 10,000kw.
| ※ | The cost of electricity consists of the usage fees that are paid according to consumption and the contract electricity prices that are relative to the maximum electricity use of the previous year. If we are able to reduce the electrical power use during the high-power demand periods in summer and winter, we can lower the power rates for the next fiscal year’s contract. Reducing the amount of this maximum use is called “peak cutting”. |
○Concurrent Summer Vacation Settings
・Centered around the Administration Building , Planned for August 13 ~ August 15(May differ by department)
○Energy Saving Settings for Computers →Click here for details (Japanese page)
○Thorough setting of air conditioner temperature (room temperature)
・Estimated room temperature over 28℃ (From around July to September)
○Utilization of Electric Fans
・2,000 units were distributed in fiscal year 2011
○Restriction on the number of running elevators
・During the period of June 1~September 30, Only 1 out of 2 elevators will be in use(Administration Building)
・Departments where it can be implemented
○Toilet seats with a warm-water shower feature- Refrain from using warm water and heated seat function
・”To save power, the warm water/heated seat functions are turned OFF." sign implementation
○Turn off Window-side Lighting
○Power down (air-conditioner, lighting, computer) when on lunch break or away from your desk(for more than 1 hour)
○Reduction of illuminated lighting fixtures
○Cleaning of air-conditioner filters and lighting fixtures
・Filter-cleaning carried out in each department
○Green Curtain Installation
・Being carried out in multiple departments

○Turning off lights for advertisement etc. (chimney lights, bulletin board lighting and others)
・Turn off the lighting fixture for the chimney advertisement for the north energy center
○Automatic doors left open etc. (side door entrance use and others)
・Being carried out in all possible departments
○General review of refrigerator use
○Copy machine power-saving measures(Power Saving Mode Time Settings)
・Using Fuji Xerox and Ricoh, implement setting reduced transition times for copy machines' energy saving mode+sleep mode
○Stop use of personal support printers (use shared copy machines)
○Turning off lights when not needed and refraining from the use of air conditioning for commons spaces, classrooms and laboratories
○Refrain from use of air conditioning and lights before opening
○Refrain from use of air conditioning for more than an hour after closing
○Reduction in personal support printers
○Review of the number of copy machines distributed
○Publicity Posters for Energy saving Implementation
○Request the cooperation of student cafeterias and other benefit facilities
・During off-peak hours of operation, turn off lighting in vending machines (where possible)
○Energy Conservation Visual
・Please refer to the above “Hiroshima University’s Electric Power Usage”
<Research Field>
○Scheduled time difference for operation of high electric-power use facilities
*Hiroshima Synchrotron Radiation Center
・From July 30, scheduled stop of experiments followed by maintenance
*Environmental Research and Management Center
・Change in the hours of operation for partially processed water production equipment (avoid operating on the date with high temperatures between 12:00 and 15:00)

|
○Refurbishment of Facilities for Large Demand Lighting (Library shelves (motion sensors, or LED))
○Implementation of an ECO patrol
○Implementation of ECO Diagnosis
○Introduction of natural energy (Solar power, etc.)
○Repair Facility (light-shielding paint on roofs, exterior wall insulation, light shielding film, multi-layer glass etc.)
○Various energy saving upgrades for construction facilities and equipment (air conditioners, lighting fixtures, transformers, pump equipment etc. )
<Research Field>
○Organize the research freezers and other cold storage contents etc. and reduce the number of units in operation
○Draft chamber operation reviewed and performed only when necessary
○Review of Clean Room cleanliness (Clean bench use, etc.)
○Implementation of power-saving measures for other experimental equipment
