“Development Committee and Progress of
World Bank Group Reform”
Date/Time: December 16 (Wed.), 2009 / 14:00-15:30
Venue: Large Conference Room (1st floor), IDEC
The World Bank/IMF Development Committee is a global, high-level meeting of financial and development ministers from 24 developed and developing countries including the G7. It is held semiannually in the spring and fall to discuss critical, timely issues about assistance to developing countries and to provide recommendations to the Governors of the World Bank and the IMF.
More than one year has passed since the global financial crisis occurred. While the global economy has shown signs of recovery, the crisis impact is adversely affecting the efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and risking the livelihood of most vulnerable people across the world. At the same time, the global crisis has facilitated the shifting of global power relations and G20 has taken over G7 as the premier forum.Under these circumstances, what and how should we do to respond to global development challenges including food security, climate change, fragile states, investing in infrastructure, support for private sector-led growth and jobs? What role should the World Bank Group and Japan play, and how should they work together?
Mr. Kiyoshi Kodera, the Executive Secretary of the Development Committee, is responsible for setting the agenda for the Development Committee and coordinating views of the World Bank President, IMF Managing Director, and ministers. On the occasion of his visit to Japan, a public seminar will be organized featuring his keynote speech discussing the role of Development Committee, and current status of the World Bank Group’s major efforts for its reform.
