近代から現代の英語小説における言語、文体、物語構造の研究を行っている。特に、小説勃興期（１８世期初期）の作家ダニエル・デフォーの小説における語りのスタイルと視点を、特に意識描写に焦点を当てて分析してきた。最近では、小説の始まりから現在に至るまで、小説の物語構造は常に変容していることを踏まえ、従来の過去時制語りの小説が、どのように現代英語小説にみられるようになった現在時制語りにつながっていくのかを、歴史的視点から研究している。現在所属している「現在時制語り」のプロジェクトでは、現代英語の過去時制語り・現在時制語りの小説の話法のコーパスを作成し、これらの語りのスタイルを量的・質的に比較研究している。
