Hiroshima University President’s Awards (12 recipients)
These recipients have made an outstanding contribution to the University’s development.

Hideo Ikeda (Professor, Graduate School for International Development and Cooperation)
An education program that approves credits for volunteering in JICA at higher education institutions has never been made before in Japan. During the process of this program being made, he has helped to build many of the systems used today. His admirable works coincide with the initiatives of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of developing global human resources.

Taichi Okuda (Associate Professor, Hiroshima Synchrotron Radiation Center)
Since the detection of electron spin is quite difficult the efficiency of spin-and angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy was so far very low. He developed new spin detector that has 100 times higher efficiency than conventional one and utilized it for the spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy experiment in the end-station of Hiroshima Synchrotron Radiation Center(HSRC).  Because of the high efficiency of the spin detector,  high-resolution spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy for 3D spin vector analysis has been realized for the first time. This remarkable achievement enhanced the number of international research collaborators dramatically and made the functionality of the HSRC strong.

Takahiro Onimaru (Associate Professor, Graduate School of Advanced Sciences of Matter)
Through his research on rare earth caged compounds, he discovered a new physical phenomenon that electric quadrupoles induce various phase transitions including superconductivity. He conducted outstanding research in the field of condensed matter physics and made significant achievements in education. He has been highly acclaimed within and beyond Japan.

Osamu Kashihara (Professor, Graduate School of Integrated Arts and Sciences)
He is eminent in the field of modern Japanese literature, notably for his study of Hideo Kobayashi, a literary critic. Besides guiding students in their research, he has made   academic exchanges with universities overseas. Furthermore, as dean of the Graduate School of Integrated Arts and Sciences, he instituted a project to promote joint research between humanity studies and natural sciences.

Yasuki Kihara (Professor, Institute of Biomedical & Health Sciences)
As the founding professor of the Cardiovascular Medicine Department (Faculty of Medicine), he established overall cooperation between regional cardiologists and affiliated hospitals. He has dedicated himself to the development of cardiovascular medicine by producing many physicians and publishing over 200 international papers. As the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, he has also made efforts in undergraduate education reform.

Ken-ichi Suzuki (Specially Appointed Associate Professor, Graduate School of Sciences)
Tetsushi Sakuma (Specially Appointed Lecturer, Graduate School of Sciences)

They developed a new genome editing technique called the PITCh (Precise Integration into Target Chromosome) system and demonstrated the accurate DNA knock-in in both cultured cells and amphibians. Their research was published on Nature Communications journal and has been highly acclaimed within and beyond Japan.

Hidetoshi Tahara (Professor, Institute of Biomedical & Health Sciences)
He developed the world’s first telomere G-tail measuring technology and automatic measuring machine, and obtained scientific evidence for its clinical application.  He made a significant contribution to the realization of “healthy longevity society” by introducing the system to analyze health risks with his venture business established to disseminate the R&D results.

Takeshi Naganuma (Professor, Office of Academic Research and Industry-Academia-Government and Community Collaboration)
This recipient broadened his educational research field globally and published many internationally recognized academic papers. He also strove to improve his students’ research experiences and made efforts on educational research to nurture high-level doctoral personnel. He contributed to increasing recognition of the university and academic field through mass media.

Michihiro Hide (Professor, Institute of Biomedical & Health Sciences)
As Chair of the Entrance Examination Committee and that of the Academic Affairs Committee, this recipient planned and implemented various reforms in entrance examination and medical education to nurture doctors with research minds. This led to increase the university’s pass-rate of the National Medical Practitioners Qualifying Examination. He also realized the implementation of liberal arts education at Higashi-Senda campus for undergraduate students of Kasumi campus.

Tatsuo Miyamoto (Lecturer, Research Institute for Radiation Biology and Medicine)
This recipient made an excellent achievement on the pathoetiological research of   genomic instability disorders. He also succeeded in identifying YAP-ARHGAP18  axis for ensuring 3D shape bodies in vertebrates. This research result was published on Nature (journal) and has been highly acclaimed within and beyond Japan.

Hideto Yoshida (Professor, Institute of Engineering)
For many years, this recipient contributed to enhancing the evaluation of powder particle properties in the particle-engineering field. He established a sedimentation method that enables high accuracy measurements of powder particle size and new classification method, engaged in creating standards, and contributed to the development of the associated industrial fields.

Hiroshima University President's Special Awards (5 recipients)

Toshie Sonobe
This recipient has been consoling the spirit of Mr. Syed Omar for nearly 70 years. Mr. Omar was a Malaysian royal family member who was exposed to the a-bomb during his study abroad at Hiroshima University of Literature and Science and passed away in Kyoto on his way back to his country. Therefore, she has made an outstanding contribution to the University’s international exchange projects and peace activities.

Hirozo Niimi (Former Head of Department for Student Affairs)
For many years, this recipient has spoken about A-bomb exposure to society by testifying his own A-bomb experience. He also gives lectures to elementary school students to introduce Mr. Syed Omar, a former international student and Malaysian royal family member who was exposed to the a-bomb during his study abroad at Hiroshima University of Literature and Science. Therefore, he has made an outstanding contribution to the University’s international exchange projects and peace activities.

Masahiro Kaibori (Professor, Graduate School of Integrated Arts and Sciences)
Takashi Tsuchida (Professor, Institute of Engineering)
Since the debris-flow disaster in Hiroshima on August 20th, 2014, both recipients have played an important role in the investigation of the disaster and the prevention and mitigation of future disasters. They participated in the committee to verify the current system for warning and evacuation and to improve the disaster management system for the safety of the local residents. Therefore, they have made outstanding contributions to the University’s social contribution activities.
