Admission Policy- School of Dentistry

1. Qualities of Desired Students
School of Dentistry seeks students who have a rich sense of humanity to become future medical professionals at the entrance to the university; have an inquiring mind in science to obtain high-leveled knowledge and skills as health specialists; can solve problems by integrating different sources of studies; have a strong will to take a leading role in the international society.

2. Basic Policy for Student Selection
Responding to different student needs such as providing extensive career opportunities  after graduation, School of Dentistry is made up of Program of Dentistry and Program of Oral Health Sciences with 2 courses; Course for Oral Science and Course for Oral Engineering.
Based on diploma policy and curriculum policy set up for each Program, the School conducts multifaceted and comprehensive selection methods utilizing “the three elements of academic ability” (knowledge and skills).

Program of Dentistry

Based on diploma policy and curriculum policy for Program of Dentistry, the program seeks students who possess a range of abilities prior to admission as follows:

  1. Knowledge and skills;
    Those who possess basic knowledge and skills necessary to learn dental medicine
  2. Capacities for thought, judgement and expression;
    Those who can respond to changes in social situations or scientific progresses, possess deep thoughts and creative perspectives, rich imagination and problem-solving skills
  3. Independence, diversity and cooperation;
    Those who possess sufficient responsibility, a rich sense of humanity with various skills including communication, data-gathering, problem-solving, logical thinking and presentation

Contents that entrants are expected to prepare before admission are as follows:

  • Abilities to read, understand, and communicate in Japanese
  • Basic abilities to read, understand, and communicate in English
  • Extensive knowledge in Japanese, social studies, math and science

Program of Dentistry also seeks students who strive to acquire abilities and qualities after entering Hiroshima University as follows:

  • Basic knowledge / skills in life science and advanced medical techniques
  • High communication skills to establish good relations with patients or medical staff
  • Viewpoint, knowledge, skills and attitude to provide qualified dental care that people require
  • Respect for rules and models, manners, sociality, cooperativeness and judgment as medical professionals
  • Scientific inquiry and advanced knowledge for interprofessional collaborative practice
  • Foreign language and communication skills to be internationally active medical specialists and life scientists

Program of Oral Health Sciences Course for Oral Science

Based on diploma policy and curriculum policy for Course for Oral Sciences, the program seeks students who possess a range of abilities prior to admission as follows:

  1. Knowledge and skills;
    Those who possess basic knowledge necessary to learn oral health as medical students that can apply to program study
  2. Capacities for thought, judgement and expression;
    Those who possess abilities to communicate, socialize, cooperate, and judge, equipped with logical thinking, problem-solving, and flexibly handling skills that can apply to program study and clinical practice
  3. Independence, diversity and cooperation;
    Those who possess an inquiring mind in science, positive character, rich imagination and patience, equipped with love for humanity, responsibility, morality, a rich sense of humanity, and various skills including communication, data-gathering, problem-solving, logical thinking and presentation that can apply to program study and clinical practice

Contents that entrants are expected to prepare before admission are as follows:

  • A wide range of scholastic knowledge in all subjects offered at high schools including subjects of National Center for University Entrance examinations and subjects of second round tests given independently by each university
  • Abilities to read, understand, and communicate in Japanese
  • Basic abilities to read, understand, and communicate in English
  • Logical-thinking and problem-solving skills

Program of Oral Sciences also seeks students who can contribute to human and society in dentistry, medicine, oral health and welfare as medical professionals after graduation,  with various abilities including advanced knowledge and medical techniques, scientific inquiry and rich humanity cultured in the program
 

Program of Oral Health Sciences Course for Oral Engineering

Based on diploma policy and curriculum policy for Course for Oral Engineering, the program seeks students who possess a range of abilities prior to admission as follows:

  1. Knowledge and skills;
    Those who possess a comprehensive knowledge necessary to learn oral engineering as medical students that can apply to program study
  2. Capacities for thought, judgement and expression;
    Those who possess abilities to communicate, solve problems by integrating different sources of studies, logically think, judge, and flexibly handle necessary to become future health professionals
  3. Independence, diversity and cooperation;
    Those who possess morality, love for humanity, common sense, rich humanity, cooperativeness, positive character, scientific inquiry, eagerness to learn, patience and international sense necessary to become future health professionals

With various qualities listed above, Course for Oral Engineering seeks students who pursue either of the followings:

  • Medical practitioners with research-mind as a member of medical care team including a dental technologist or a medical artist
  • Researchers cultivating a new study field, oral engineering,
  • Career persons with a clinical mind who can take a leading part as oral engineers
  • Educators in oral engineering
  • Personnel who can take a leading role in the international community

Contents that entrants are expected to prepare before admission are as follows:
A wide range of scholastic knowledge in Japanese, social studies, math, science and foreign language

Course for Oral Engineering also seeks students who strive to acquire abilities and qualities after entering Hiroshima University as follows:

  • Skills to integrate and apply acquired knowledge and skills; a broad range of education, dental technology, basic and clinical dental medicine, adjacent medical fields and relevant engineering fields
  • Communication skills, respect for rules, manner, abilities to establish good relationships with patients and staff and to practice patient-centered dental care team as medical professionals
  • Skills to take a leading role in research・education・clinical practice for oral engineering , equipped with various abilities; data-gathering, problem-solving, scientific inquiry, pursuing research activities, research development, logical-thinking and life-long learning
