Title:

Frontier Research in Empirical Economics: Gender Issues in Labor Market of Indonesia

Speaker: Dr. Dainn Wie, National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies

Abstract:

In this paper, we examine evolution gender wage gap and female labor supply of Indonesia. Gender wage gap in Indonesia sharply declined for two decades. Most of decrease in gender wage gap happened in 1990s. We show that women’s improvement in both observed and unobserved skill contributed to decrease in gender wage gap. However, increase in wage inequality in 2000s works against gender wage gap. We also examine seemingly stagnating trend of female labor supply in Indonesia and find out decrease in own and cross wage elasticity. It implies that Indonesia women’s attitude toward labor market participation change.
