JENESYS2.0 – Students from ASEAN Countries etc. Visited Hiroshima University and Exchanged with HU Students!

As part of the JENESYS2.0, which is a youth exchange project between Japan and Asia-Pacific region, 360 young people from 10 ASEAN countries and Australia, New Zealand and East Timor visited Japan from December 2 (Mon) to 10 (Tue). Among them, 40 participants came to Hiroshima University on December 6 (Fri) and exchanged with 26 students from HU. In the morning, the visitors listened to a mini-lecture on rice wine-making in Saijo and village forest conservation held by Dr. Ogura, a researcher from the HU Education and International Office. Then, they experienced “water tasting” (mother water for rice wine, tap water, French mineral water). Afterwards they separated into groups to have a discussion in English on environment issues of each country. After the discussion they reported the results, given three minutes each. Then, they had lunch (halal chicken curry, salad and dessert) at the University Hall.

HU students who took part in this exchange, mentioned about their impressions as follows: “It was a precious experience to talk with students from so many countries and to hear about each country’s issues”. Or “I would like to hear more about each country’s situation”, “we only had a little time but a lot of fun”, and “I need to study English more”.

The participants not only enjoyed the exchange, through the discussion they also learned a lot about global environmental issues and about the differences in their ways of thinking. At the same time, their motivations for studying increased. Of course, study abroad is very important, but students can have international exchange on campus as well. We hope that this activity helps the students at our university to benefit from international and cultural exchange and intercultural experiences inside and outside the campus, and that they grow into personalities with global vision and spread their wings around the world.
