Participation in the APSTSN Biennial Conference 2013



Dr. Kenji Kamiya, Program Coordinator and five graduate students of the Phoenix Leader Education Program (Hiroshima Initiative) for Renaissance from Radiation Disaster, Hiroshima University, participated in Asia-Pacific Science, Technology and Society Network (APSTSN) Biennial Conference 2013Knowing, Making, Governing, held in Singapore from 15 to 17 July.



Members of APSTSN were from 13 Asia-Pacific countries including Japan. The purpose of the conference is to encourage science, technology and society (STS) research, learning, collaboration and critical discussion on current STS themes and issues in the the Asia-Pacific region and to foster collaboration between STS researchers with other scholars and researchers, and end usersin government, industry and the community, to ensure better information dissemination and policy and decision making, etc.



A plenary session titled Medical and Academic Responses to Fukushima Nuclear Accidentwas incubated by Dr. Rethy K. Chhem, Director, Division of Human Health, Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the conference. At the session, five lecturers in a variety of academic fields such as physician, and specialists in radiation who had worked in the front line after the accident at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant occurred in March, 2011, talked about what each of them had experienced.



Dr. Kamiya and Ms. Mariko Komatsu, a graduate student of Radiation Social Recovery Course, made presentations with the titles ‘Our Experiences in The Fukushima Nuclear Accident and Fukushima Health Management Survey’ and ‘For the Future of Fukushima: A Research on Children’s Perception in Fukushima Disaster’ respectively.
