Phoenix Leader Education Program the 7th Short Field Visit was held.

The 7th Short Field Visit was held.

The 7th short field visit was conducted from the 1st to the 2nd of November 2014. Fourteen people, including both program students and teaching staff visited Fukushima city, Iidate village, Minamisoma city, Odaka district and Iwaki city.

On the 1st day they observed decontaminated fields and temporary storage sites of piled up decontaminated waste from the bus on their way from Fukushima city to Minamisoma city. They dropped by the Iidate village office and measured radiation levels in the air. In Minamisoma city they had a lecture at Minamisoma city general hospital. They learned about the current state and issues of Minamisoma city’s medical care since the disaster occurred on the 11th of March 2011. At the mouth of the Ohtagwa River, they could see the remains of the aftermath of the Tsunami. They also saw

zones being prepared for lifting of evacuation order
near Odaka station. After visiting Odaka station, they moved to the south on National Route 6 where traffic regulations had been lifted on the 15th of September 2014. They felt tense near the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant and measured radiation levels on the bus.

On the second day the students and teaching staff had a review meeting on what they had observed and they realized once again that this kind of interdisciplinary learning is important to become global leaders in the field of radiation disaster recovery. It was a very significant opportunity for the new students.
