Phoenix Leader Education Program (Hiroshima Initiative) for Renaissance from Radiation Disaster

The 1st global field visit was held.

The Phoenix Leader Education Program held the 1st global field visit in the Republic of Republic of Belarus from January 12 to 16, 2015. The program student and staff visited the Belarusian State Medical University and the Gomel State Medical University to learn about the thyroid cancer survey and the internal exposure check for the affected people resulting from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident. They also visited Gomel Chachersk central hospital and its clinic in suburbs to learn about the local medical system and to observe the continuous survey results on internal exposure for the people who were exposed to the radiation caused by the accident when they were children.

During their site visits, they had good discussions with the people there. Some hoped to utilize their accumulated medical experiences in Belarus in aid the recovery from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident. Some mentioned that the recovery of agriculture is also important, and the new agricultural system in Belarus can be a good example for the recovery of Fukushima. Approaches to psychological issues of children and parents, and communities are important issues as well as approaches to medical and environmental issues. They are very difficult issues, but should be taken care of.

Those comments were very useful for the participating student.

This global visit was conducted under the cooperation with Prof. Takamura of Nagasaki University, who is one of the program members.
