The 3rd Phoenix Leader Education Program seminar 2015

In the 3rd Phoenix Leader Education Program (PLEP) seminar 2015, Mr. Shigehiro SUGI (President, residents’ association of YUSHIN ground temporary housing), gave a lecture entitled “My four years’ experience in the temporary housing in Minamisoma city - Life in a temporary housing caused by radiation disaster of the Fukushima No.1 Nuclear Power Plant accident-“ on June 25. The PELP seminars are held regularly with the purpose of disseminating information about the activities of our program by providing open classes and lectures to Hiroshima University students, faculty and staff.

More than 25 people, including both undergraduate and PLEP graduate students, attended the seminar and contributed to a lively learning environment.

In his lecture, Mr. Sugi talked about the tsunami damage caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake, the evacuation of residents from Minamisoma city due to the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant accident, and the hardship of the evacuees’ life. He also mentioned his experience staying at an evacuation center and in temporary housing. Lastly Dr. Urabe, program member and professor, Graduate school of Biomedical & Health Sciences, concluded the seminar by thanking Mr, Sugi for the precious opportunity for the students and staff to be able to listen in person to the first-hand experience of someone directly affected by the disaster. He also stated that the seminar was very useful preparation for the upcoming short fieldwork due to take place in September when a group of PLEP students will be visiting one of the temporary housing. It was a very useful seminar for all participants.
