Research Center for Hepatology and Gastroenterology

Goals

Leading the World in Hepatological Research – developing innovative therapies and fostering advanced medical experts able to make a global impact

  1. To create an educational and research hub in the global network of hepatology researchers by utilizing hepatitis virus reverse genetics technology with our center's exclusive human hepatocyte chimeric mice
  2. Establish a consolidated bioresource repository, develop innovative therapies (e.g., immunotherapy and transplantation), and achieve a sustained virological response through enhanced international collaboration
  3. To cultivate human resources in this field

Background

Deaths due to liver failure are expected to increase worldwide, as the liver function of chronic hepatitis virus carriers deteriorates. An upward trend in steatohepatic diseases, caused by obesity and heavy alcohol drinking may also contribute. Given the limitations of transplantation, development of epochal therapies is crucial.

Plans

Outcomes

  1. Development of epochal therapies through world-class, advanced research collaborations
  2. Fostering of research-conscious medical experts by educating doctors, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows through cutting-edge liver research
  3. Cultivation of various human resources such as clinical research coordinators and cell processing experts
