Center for Regenerative Therapy

Goal

As envisioned in "Medical Institution for the Tertiary Radiation Emergency" and "A Medical Support Organization as a Part of the IAEA EPR-RANET"

We wish to develop regenerative therapies using cells differentiated from iPS cells for radiation emergency medicine.

Background

  • Need to establish a method of defense against and a treatment for the effects of radiation exposure due to nuclear power plant accidents and nuclear terrorism.
  • Need to develop cell therapy (using cells other than hematopoietic cells), cellular repair technology, and regenerative biotechnology for use in radiation emergency medicine.
>
Leading the world in the development of cell therapy for use in radiation emergency medicine.
>
Forming an international hub that deals with radiation-related accidents and incidents.
>
Promoting cutting-edge medical research and developing human resources for treating the effects of radiation.

Plans

In order to develop regenerative therapies for radiation emergency medicine, which are based on the existing forms of treatment, we will attempt to establish a safe and secure iPS cell bank in the Cell Processing Center. With this iPS cell bank at the core of the radiation emergency medical system, we will try to develop an education program in radiation emergency medicine and to create a network of medical centers offering regenerative therapy for individuals affected by radiation exposure.

Outcomes

Regenerative Therapy for Radiation Emergency Medicine

Establishment of a medical institution that will provide cell-based therapy for the treatment of the effects of radiation in tertiary radiation emergencies

To develop a world-class facility for radiation emergency medicine in cooperation with WHO-REMPAN.

  • Strategies for promoting basic and clinical research in radiation emergency medicine through international collaboration
  • Systematic promotion of the development of new therapies based on cell therapy, cellular repair, and regenerative biotechnology through collaboration between medical experts in various fields, teaching staff (including those in basic research), graduate students, post-docs, research coordinators, doctors, nurses, etc.
