About the rules and required documents for admission of Non-degree Courses

This is to inform you of the following rules and procedures concerning the admission of international students who are not scholarship recipients into the Department of Economics, Graduate School of Social Sciences, Hiroshima University.

Candidate students are required to obtain approval from their prospective academic advisors before applying for admission.

  1. The educational and research activities of the teaching faculty members of the Department can be viewed here.
  2. Please prepare "curriculum vitae", "academic transcript (indicating registered subjects)", and "research proposal".

Upon applying for admission, candidate students are evaluated in the linguistic proficiency necessary for communication to receive instruction in research:

Candidate students are required to submit their Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) Certificate of Result and Scores, TOEFL(R), TOEIC(R) or IELTS(TM) results.

  • For the Japanese ability or English ability, the following is a person who has not been reached in any of the score, it will not be allowed to accept.
    1. Japanese Language Proficiency Test: Level N2 or higher
    2. TOEFL(R) test: Total Score (iBT conversion) 72 points or higher
    3. TOEIC(R) test: Score Report 785 points or higher
    4. IELTS(TM): Overall Band Score 5.5 points or higher

At the time of application, candidate students will also be evaluated in their ability to bear the financial costs of their studies. Admitted candidates are required to pay admission, research and other specified fees to the Department within three months of admission, or their admission will be cancelled.

Admission Requirements

Candidate students must fulfill either of the following conditions:

  1. Complete 16 years of formal education in a foreign country; or
  2. Be recognized by Hiroshima University as having equivalent qualifications as a research student.

Admission Procedure

Required Documents

  3. Degree transcript or (expected) graduation certificate issued by the university or college attended
    1. Applicants who have graduated or are expected to graduate from a university or equivalent in China (excluding Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau) must submit the following documents:
      • Graduates must submit the following documents:
        • Certificate of graduation (毕业证书)
        • Diploma(硕士学位证书)
      • Documents listed below are obtainable from "中国高等教育学历证书查询 (CHSI)" (http://www.chsi.cn/xlcx/bgys.jsp), which is officially recognized by the Ministry of Education of China:
        • Graduates: Online Verification Report of Higher Education Qualification Certificate (教育部学历证书电子注册备案表)
        • Expected graduates: Online Verification Report of Student Record (教育部学籍在线验证报告). The document issuance fee must be borne by the applicant. Make sure that the online verification remains valid at least for the next 15 days at the time of submission of the application.
    2. In the case the applicant is the graduate of the universities of country or region not indicated in 1, if the degree information is not stated on the diploma, please submit the degree certificate.
  4. Transcript of scholastic record issued by the university or college attended
  5. A copy of Certificate of Residence of or Certificate of Registered Matters obtained from a local Japanese government administrative office. (This applies only to applicants currently residing in Japan.)
    *Candidates currently residing outside Japan must submit this document to the University at the earliest possible time following their arrival in Japan.
  6. Recommendation from the President or the Dean of the faculty at the university or the college attended
  7. Medical certificate (prescribed form)
  8. Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) Certificate of Result and Scores confirming level N2 or higher, Report of the TOEFL(R) test confirming Total Score (iBT conversion) 72 points or higher, Report of the TOEIC(R) test confirming Score Report 785 points or higher, or Report of the IELTS(TM) confirming Overall Band Score 5.5 points or higher.
  9. Statement of financial sources (NB: use the prescribed form), balance certificate
  10. Certificate of bank transfer of Application Fee (9,800 yen)

Deadline for Document Submission

  • Candidates residing outside Japan: Four months before commencement of research (April Enrollment: Must arrive no later than the end of November of the previous year, October Enrollment: Must arrive no later than the end of May)
  • Candidates residing inside Japan: 30 days before commencement of research (April Enrollment: Must arrive no later than the end of February, October Enrollment: Must arrive no later than the end of August)

Application Fee / Admission Fee / Research Fee

  • Application Fee: 9,800 yen
  • Admission Fee: 84,600 yen
  • Research Fee: 178,200 yen per semester (356,400 yen per year)

Admission

Admission for non-degree students is at the beginning of each semester in April and October.

Registration Period

Research students are admitted for one semester or one year. He/she may apply for a renewal of this period if necessary for the purpose of his/her studies. (Maximum permissible registration period: aggregated total of two years)
