BiosphereI Science Alumnus Honored with Top Philippine Science and Technology Award





The National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) of the Republic of the Philippines recognized Dr. Alonzo A. Gabriel as the 2013 Outstanding Young Scientist in the field of Food Microbiology and Hygiene during fitting ceremonies at the Manila Hotel on July 11, 2013. This prestigious award is conferred annually upon Filipino scientists under the age of 40 who have exhibited outstanding scientific achievements in their respective disciplines.




Dr. Gabriel is currently associate professor at the Department of Food Science and Nutrition, College of Home Economics of the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City. Under a scholarship grant from the Japan Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), he pursued graduate studies in the laboratory of Professor Hiroyuki Nakano from 2007 to 2010 focusing on food microbiology and safety standards. He submitted his Ph.D. dissertation entitled “Antimicrobial efficacies of physicochemical parameter combinations towards microorganisms in fruit juice,” many portions of which have been published in peer-reviewed international journals.



Another Biosphere Science alumnus, Dr. Jose M. Oclarit, was similarly honored by the NAST in 1995 in the field of Marine Biochemistry. He studied the biochemistry of bioactive compounds from marine sponges for his Ph.D. research under the supervision of Professor Susumu Ikegami.
