INDONESIAN ALUMNUS HEADS REGIONAL RESEARCH BODY

Dr. Imran Zulhamsyah was recently appointed as the Director of the Regional Research Center for Tropical Biology (BIOTROP) of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) with headquarters in Bogor, Indonesia.  Prior to his latest appointment, he was Deputy Director of BIOTROP since January 2018.

A recognized marine resource management specialist, he studied for his undergraduate and master’s diplomas at the IPB University (or Institut Pertanian Bogor in Indonesian, Bogor Agricultural University in English).  He then pursued doctoral studies at the then Graduate School of Biosphere Science at Hiroshima University under the supervision of Professors Masahiro YAMAO and Kenji HOSONO which resulted in the awarding of a Ph.D. by Hiroshima University in 2015.  His research has focused on community knowledge, attitudes and practices towards environmental conservation including the coastal vulnerability index and resilience of the coastal communities in Aceh (northwestern Sumatera) after the catastrophic 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami disaster.  Concurrent to his position at BIOTROP, he also teaches as a Lecturer at the IPB University since 1997.

To recognize 20 years of dedicated government service, he was awarded the Satya Lencana Karya, or Satya Silver Badge for Civil Service by His Excellency Joko Widodo, the President of the Republic of Indonesia.
