The international symposium on Nuclear Power Policy and Low Carbon Society in Asia was held in Hiroshima city



The Graduate School for International Development and Cooperation, Hiroshima University held a symposium, titled "Nuclear Power Policy and Low Carbon Society in Asia" at Hiroshima International Conference Center on March 25, 2013.

This was the final symposium of "Global Environmental Leaders Education Program for Designing a Low-Carbon Society" supported by Strategic Funds for the Promotion of Science and Technology.

The first keynote speaker, Dr. Tateo Arimoto, Director-General, Research Institute of Science and Technology for Society, Japan Science and Technology Agency discussed the role and responsibility of scientists and the government.

He also emphasized the need of cooperation between the two parties in order to solve uncertain issues confronting our society.

The second speaker, Mr. Kenzo Oshima, Commissioner of Nuclear Regulation Authority explained what happened at Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant and offered lessons learned from the accident as well as measures need to be taken.

In the panel discussion, five renowned scientists exchanged views on disposal of radioactive waste, the need of a national debate on possible risks posed by nuclear power generation and our responsibility to pass on to the next generation and other countries causes of the Fukushima nuclear accident and knowledge of Hiroshima, the site of the atomic bombing.

The panelists also discussed the necessity of human resources for the future society, for example, those who can precisely explain to the public risks like the Great East Japan Earthquake and the following nuclear power plant accident caused for judging its acceptance and who can provide scientific knowledge to the society and policymaking process.

This symposium gave a valuable opportunity to participants to consider the future direction for nurturing not only international environmental leaders but also leaders required by the society as a whole.
