HU exchanges opinions with the University of Dental Medicine, Yangon (Myanmar) and the Forest Department of Ministry of Forestry on the Phoenix Leader Education Program

　Hiroshima University conducts the “Phoenix Leader Education Program (Hiroshima Initiative) for Renaissance from Radiation Disaster”, adopted to the Program for Leading Graduate Schools, MEXT. In June 2013, HU exchanged opinions concerning this program with Rector Thein Kyu from the University of Dental Medicine, Yangon, Deputy Director General Zaw Win from the Myanmar Forest Department and the related officials. At every visit, Executive and Vice President Tetsuji Okamoto, the head of the program, gave details about the program and student recruitment, after which an exchange of opinions was held.

At the University of Dental Medicine, Yangon they discussed the faculty-level exchange agreement with the HU Faculty of Dentistry and inspected the education and research facilities.

During the visit to the Forest Department, which is located in Naypyidaw, the capital of Myanmar, they negotiated toward the conclusion of an agreement on the implementation of joint research on “Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD)” currently conducted by the research group led by Professor Toshinori Okuda, who was one of the visiting members.

This program is for both domestic and international students, and aims to develop global leaders in recovery from radiation disaster. Participation by students from Myanmar is expected in the future.
