Students visited Shimane nuclear power plant

On 28 June 2014, 24 program students and teaching staff visited Chugoku Electric Power Company’s Shimane nuclear power plant. It was the 3rd short field visit of the program.

These short field visits were intended to provide program students with the opportunities to acquire interdisciplinary and practical knowledge by visiting various sites outside of campus to learn from first-hand experience. The curriculum map was provided in advance to show the detailed learning goals and learning objectives of the visit to this site.

At first they were briefed on Shimane nuclear power plant and observed the important quake-proof building under construction, and emergency mobile generators and water injectors. At the No. 3 unit building they observed power generating turbines, a fuel pool, reactor pressure vessel with its cover open, and the central control room.

Participating students stated that they could expand their knowledge, as it was a valuable opportunity for them to observe the field that was not within their own discipline. It was a fruitful site visit for those students who are expected to be interdisciplinary global leaders.
