The program students attended FMU-IAEA international academic conference.

The FMU-IAEA International Academic Conference, “Radiation, Health, and Population: The Multiple Dimensions of Post-Fukushima Disaster Recovery” organized by Fukushima Medical University and International Atomic Energy Agency was held from 25th to 27th July 2014 at Fukushima Medical University. The conference was held in collaboration with Fukushima prefecture, Phoenix Leader Education Program (Hiroshima University), Nagasaki University. Tetsuji Okamoto, Program director, and Kenji Kamiya, Program Coordinator, and Koichi Tanigawa, Program member, gave presentations and six program students attended the conference.

In relation to the damage to people’s health caused by the radiation disaster in Fukushima, it had been discussed at the last conference that not only the medical knowledge but also interdisciplinary efforts including science and technology, social science and humanities for recovery were necessary. The necessity for reform in medical education was also discussed.

This time the conference was attended by experts in various fields such as medicine, psychology, science, technology and society (STS), history and education from Japan, the US, Europe, Asia and African countries and also students from Japan and the US. A total of 43 researchers and students shared their knowledge and experience to solve the problems and they had active discussions.

Three students from our program made presentations about their research and future goals in the session. They also participated in a students’ debate and exchanged opinions with students from the US. They showed their successful results and at the same time they could receive useful feedback and advice from the experts. Other students also asked questions to the lecturers and contributed a lot to develop the discussion.
