Phoenix Leader Education Program the 8th Short Field Visit was held.

The 8th Short Field Visit was held.

The 8th short field visit was conducted from the 15th to the 16th of December 2014. Twenty people, including both program students and teaching staff visited the National Institute of Radiological Sciences, Chiba and the National Institute for Environmental Sciences, Ibaraki.

At the National Institute of Radiological Sciences, they observed the electrostatic accelerator building, emergency exposure medicine facility, heavy particle beam building etc. and they got to know about the cutting-edge research in physics, biology and medicine. They also learned the most advanced knowledge in assessing the effect of long-term low dose radiation exposure on children using mice and rats.

At the National Institute for Environmental Sciences, they visited the main research building, environmental sample time capsule building, water environment experiment building, RI and genetic engineering experiment building. They learned about radiation dose measurement results in the air, water, soil and forest and their status after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident resulting from the Great East Japan Earthquake.

The participating students stated that it was a valuable learning opportunity to get to know about the state-of-the-art knowledge in fields other than their own. Some mentioned that they could review what they had learned from lectures and deepened their understanding. It was a very fruitful site visit.
