We signed an agreement to establish “Research Base for Radiation Accidents and Medical Science”

Hiroshima University will establish a network-type base for joint usage and research between three universities, Nagasaki University, Fukushima Medical University and Hiroshima University, on April 2016. Prior to the research base’s launch, an agreement signing ceremony was held in Hiroshima city on February 17th.

The soon-to-be-established “Research Base for Radiation Accidents and Medical Science” is a research base for three institutions; the Research Institute for Radiation Biology and Medicine of Hiroshima University, the Atomic Bomb Disease Institute of Nagasaki University, and the Fukushima Global Medical Science Center of Fukushima Medical University.

Along with President Mitsuo Ochi of Hiroshima University, President Shigeru Katamine of Nagasaki University and President Shinichi Kikuchi of Fukushima Medical University attended the signing ceremony. At the ceremony, President Ochi said, “I would like to build a network to seek peace through the radiation accident studies. I also would like to contribute to Hiroshima University’s atomic bomb-related research results to Fukushima’s recovery.”

Hiroshima University and Nagasaki University have accumulated knowledge of over half a century about Medical care for atomic-bomb survivors and radiation-induced diseases. Fukushima Medical University plays a central role for Fukushima's recovery from the nuclear disaster. With collaborations of those three universities, the new center will be established to promote leading and academic joint usage and research regarding radiation disasters, dissemination of research results to the world, and human resource development as well as human resource exchanges. The center aims to develop a long run academic infrastructure for Fukushima’s recovery, as well as to make further social contribution regarding radiation studies.
