Professor Kenji Kamiya, Director of the Research Institute for Radiation Biology and Medicine, awarded the Prime Minister's Commendation to Contributors for disaster prevention for FY2012

Professor Kenji Kamiya, the Director of the Research Institute for Radiation Biology and Medicine, was awarded the Prime Minister's Commendation to Contributors for disaster prevention for FY2012.

Based on the “Guidelines for ‘Disaster Preparedness Day’ and ‘Disaster Preparedness Week’” (approved by the Cabinet on May 11, 1982), the Prime Minister's Commendation to Contributors for disaster prevention was established in order to honor groups or individuals for excellent achievements in the following fields: Activities such as lifesaving in a time of disaster, prevention of damage expansion, raising people’s awareness of disaster prevention at ordinary times and contribution to effective disaster prevention plans .

This year, 3 individuals and 141 groups received the award.

Director Kamiya is a leading authority in the domain of radiation biology. When the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station incident happened after the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011, as the chairperson of the Hiroshima University Radiation Emergency Medicine Committee, he spearheaded the mission of the Radiation Emergency Medical Assistance Team and greatly contributed to the residents’ safety, security and protection from radiation exposure.

Director Kamiya is also an expert on the health effects of radiation. By offering advice on radiation protection and lecturing about the health risks of radiation, he made a significant contribution to the health protection of the population affected by the Fukushima Nuclear Accident.

This award recognized his great services and contributions.

The award ceremony was held on September 10, 2012 at the Hotel Grand Arc Hanzomon (Tokyo).
