HU exchanges opinions with the Universiti Malaysia Sabah on the Phoenix Leader Education Program

Hiroshima University is conducting the “Phoenix Leader Education Program (Hiroshima Initiative) for Renaissance from Radiation Disaster” adopted by MEXT (Program for Leading Graduate Schools). In April 2013, HU had a meeting about this program with Ms. Janie Liew-Tsonis, the Director of the International Center of the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and other teaching staff members.

The Universiti Malaysia Sabah (About 17,000 Students in 13 Faculties/Graduate Schools and 3 Research Centers etc.), located in the outskirts of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, is a new university that was established in 1994 as the first national university in Sabah. There are also campuses in Sandakan and Labuan.

In the meeting, Executive and Vice President Tetsuji Okamoto, the head of the program, gave details about the program and student recruitment, after whichan opinion exchange was held.

This program is for both domestic and international students, aiming to develop global leaders in recovery from radiation disaster. Participation by students from Universiti Malaysia Sabah is expected in the future.

After the meeting, we visited the Institute for Tropical Biology and Conservation(ITBC)of UMS, conducting joint research with a HU research group led by Professor Hironori Deguchi, who also is a visiting member from HU. ITBC is conducting research on protecting the species and habitats of tropical organisms, information circulation and human resource development. After touring the biological specimen chamber for insects (BORNEENSIS) that has been partially remodeled with the support of JICA, there was a discussion on academic exchange in the future.

Additionally, we visited the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Training Institute (ILPKK: About 750 Students, 12 Training Courses)and attended a facility tour guided by Mr. Yukio Munenaga working as a school advisor as the JICA senior overseas volunteer from Hiroshima Prefecture. During the tour, we received an explanation of “5S Methodology” – “Seiri” (Organizing), “Seiton” (Arrangement), “Seisou” (Cleaning), “Seiketsu” (Cleanliness), and “Shitsuke” (Discipline), especially about their industrial training method through cleanup activities.
