Hiroshima University’s application to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) for the establishment of the Graduate School of Maritime and Marine Science (Master’s Program) has been approved, with the Graduate School scheduled to be established in October 2027.
The Graduate School will be established as a Basic Organization for the Delivery of Inter-Graduate School Programs, in which multiple graduate schools closely collaborate in providing education. It will be the University’s second initiative of this kind, following the Graduate School of Innovation and Practice for Smart Society.
The Graduate School will develop highly skilled interdisciplinary human resources who possess an international perspective and broad-based general knowledge, together with foundational knowledge in the three fields related to maritime, marine, and shipbuilding sciences—Marine Policy and Ocean Governance, Marine Utilization Technologies, and Marine Environment and Resources—as well as advanced expertise and application skills in each field.
The Graduate School will admit 15 students per year, and all education will be conducted in English. Graduates will be awarded the degree of Master of Maritime and Marine Science. The University will now begin full-scale student recruitment activities.
The Graduate School will also establish a new Kure Campus, while designating the waters around Kure as a “place of learning” for education and research. The campus is being developed in collaboration with Kure City as part of the Kure City–Hiroshima University Town & Gown Initiative, which aims to create a new hub for maritime and marine activities in Asia. A portion of the Kure Station West Central Building owned by Kure City will be renovated to provide lecture rooms and other facilities, with classes scheduled to begin in October 2027.
In the future, the University will also consider relocating the Graduate School to an area near the base for the training and research vessel of the School of Applied Biological Science, and will continue discussions with Kure City on the development of a multifunctional facility equipped with community‑oriented industry–academia collaboration functions.
