Objectives and Goals
Finance is an essential area of knowledge and expertise not only for professionals working in financial institutions such as banks, securities firms, and insurance companies, or in corporate finance and accounting departments, but also for those engaged in planning, management, and administration in general business enterprises and public organizations.
In response to recent developments such as the demand for improved capital efficiency in financial markets, the rise of stock-conscious management, effective information disclosure and investor relations (IR), increased M&A activity, and government initiatives to establish Japan as an investment-driven nation, the Finance Field aims to cultivate professionals with advanced expertise in business evaluation, strategic planning, and risk management—skills essential for corporations and municipalities. The field also supports reskilling education for working professionals.
Through a curriculum and teaching methods that involve repeated experience in finance-based approaches to real-world problems, theory-driven thinking, and quantitative analysis using data, the field seeks to develop systematic applied skills that bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical application.
Target Students
This field is intended for individuals working in financial institutions, general business enterprises, or public organizations, as well as entrepreneurs engaged in management, planning, or administration. No prior knowledge of economics, mathematics, or statistics is required at the time of admission. A special admission track, the “Special Selection for Adult Students,” is available for working professionals.
Course Structure
The Finance Field follows a coursework-based structure, with a curriculum designed to efficiently achieve educational goals. The two-year master’s program (the first half of the doctoral program) is divided into four semesters, each with clearly defined objectives and corresponding courses to ensure smooth progression. Students also select a research project aligned with their interests, which they analyze and develop solutions for during the final semester.
For those who anticipate difficulty completing the field within two years due to work commitments or other circumstances, a long-term study option is available. Students may designate a study period of up to four years at the time of admission and pursue their learning and research in a planned manner. In this case, the total tuition fee for two years is distributed evenly across the chosen study period.
Collaborative Lectures
In the Finance Field, we collaborate with the Bank of Japan and the Financial Services Agency to provide education and research guidance. In addition to lectures by Hiroshima University faculty, students attend sessions led by practitioners active on the front lines of finance. These lectures address real-world issues and foster the development of applied skills that bridge the gap between theory and practice, encouraging students to explore innovative solutions through a financial lens.
Collaboration with the Bank of Japan
Since fiscal year 2004, the Finance Field has welcomed expert staff from the Bank of Japan as visiting faculty members. These professionals engage in joint research aimed at contributing to regional economic development and provide educational and research guidance to graduate students in the Finance Field.
Collaboration with the Financial Services Agency
Since fiscal year 2005, the Finance Field has welcomed expert staff from the Financial Services Agency as visiting faculty members.
