Hiroshima University will install a new monument, the “Inextinguishable Lamp of Learning,” on the Higashi-Senda Campus, the birthplace of the university. The monument is intended to symbolize and carry forward the ideals of “the pursuit of peace,” “the pursuit of knowledge,” and “contribution to society,” inherited by generations of people connected with Hiroshima University, including members of its predecessor schools who lost their lives in the atomic bombing.

The monument will serve as a symbol connecting Hiroshima University’s history and ideals as a university founded in Hiroshima, a city devastated by the atomic bombing, to the future, while passing on to future generations the pride and sense of mission shared by all those connected with the university. The “Inextinguishable Lamp of Learning” embodies the university’s commitment to peace, knowledge, and service to society. It is intended to carry these values into the future, with the hope that its light will continue to shine for the next 100 years and beyond.

Behind the monument, a donor recognition display will be installed featuring nameplates (each measuring 50 mm tall by 15 mm wide) engraved with the names of alumni, faculty and staff, as well as others with ties to the university, who supported the aims of this project.

Applications to have a nameplate displayed are scheduled to open soon. Details on eligibility and the application process will be announced on the university’s website at a later date.

• Concept
  An object symbolizing “light” will be placed at the center, with recognition displays at the back and on both sides. At night, indirect lighting will create a serene glow.
• Inscription
  The monument will feature an inscription expressing the ideal of passing on to future generations the aspirations of those connected with the university.
