What did you achieve at AdSM?

During my studying at Hiroshima University, many things were achieved including publication of three papers in international journals, attending an international meeting in Hawaii-USA, making friendships, international networking, and of course, learning the highest skills and knowledge of molecular biotechnology. Besides that, “academic mind” learned from ADSM was most important for me to adopt it to develop better research in my home country, Indonesia. Of course, the PhD award was the highest achievement from AdSM – Hiroshima University.

Was there anything that surprised you in Japan?

Hmm, I think, there were so many things surprising me when I visited Japan for the first time; such as well-arranged lifestyle, the weather extremely different from my country, especially in winter, and foods.

How was your life in Higashi-Hiroshima city?

Living in Higashi-Hiroshima city was very comfortable for me to concentrate on my study and also for my family to enjoy Japanese culture. It was safe and peaceful. There were also many convenience stores and supermarkets that helped me to obtain household goods whenever I need. Beside my own daily life, there were also Indonesian communities like Indonesian Student Association (PPI-Hiroshima) and Kesatuan Muslim Indonesia-Hiroshima (KMIH). Both Indonesian communities were very helpful to me for settling, surviving and enjoying life during my study.

What do you do now and where?

After awarded a PhD in 2012, I returned to Indonesia. I have a position as a lecturer at Faculty of Agriculture, Jember University. I also hold a position as a member/researcher at Division of Biology Molecular and Biotechnology, Center for Development of Advanced Sciences and Technology (CDAST), Jember University. Recently, I have been working on bacteriophages and biological control of plant pathogenic bacteria. Now, I am visiting ADSM, Hiroshima University for one month as a visiting researcher based on the Exchange Agreement between CDAST, Jember University and ADSM, Hiroshima University.

Please write a message for future international students.

Studying at Hiroshima University is a very good choice for achieving good experiences, research skills, and networking. At the beginning, it may seem to be very difficult to live in Japan, but you will be easily adapted because many Japanese friends will help and guide you (not be alone). Because Hiroshima University (Higashi-Hiroshima Campus) is located in Saijo, a local but peaceful and quiet place, it is very good for living and studying. You will enjoy the blessing of this campus. Don’t worry, everything is going to be easy. Living in Japan, especially in Higashi-Hiroshima city is simple and comfortable.
