Be a researcher/engineer leading the fourth industrial revolution

Accelerating complex data processing

Our research group has been doing a research on acceleration techniques for various computations using GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) and FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays). A GPU has a lot of operating units working in parallel and is used as a building block of supercomputers. FPGAs are more power-efficient than GPUs and also being used for speeding many computations. We have developed and proposed techniques, algorithms, and architectures to accelerate computations in the areas of cryptography, machine learning, context analysis and data compression/decompression among others.

For faster big data processing

Due to the recent improvement of semiconductor technology, GPUs and FPGAs with thousands of operating units are available at low cost now. However, it is not easy to control thousands of operating units cooperatively so various ingenious techniques are necessary. Researches on GPUs and FPPGAs are very attractive, because we can actually implement our novel ideas in them and research results may be widely used by other researchers. For processing big data, parallel processing using GPUs and FPGAs is mandatory. One of our research goals is to establish algorithm/hardware design methodology for high performance computing using these devices.

Be a leader of the fourth industrial revolution

In order to use GPUs and FPGAs, it is necessary to have sufficient knowledge of high-school-level mathematics and discrete mathematics which you learn at a university. It is also necessary to have knowledge of a digital circuit design and a programming skill. What is important is to understand the essence, not just memorizing. Social structure may be drastically changed in near future, due to the fourth industrial revolution by AI and IoT technologies. We welcome future researchers and engineers who wish to learn technologies and knowledges of informatics and data science to lead this revolution.
