Dean, The Graduate School of Innovation and Practice for Smart Society

The Graduate School of Innovation and Practice for Smart Society was established in April 2023 as the university's first basic organization for implementing inter-graduate school curricula, with the aim of providing interdisciplinary education across multiple graduate schools. Through education in cross-disciplinary fields in which all four graduate schools of the University closely collaborate and cooperate with each other, we aim to develop cross-disciplinary global human resources who can play a key role in the realization of a smart society, through the social implementation and international development of Society 5.0, which is a human-centered society that integrates the cyberspace and physical space in a sophisticated way.

The graduate school is composed of six research fields: Cyber Physical System, Smart Mobility, Smart Energy, Smart Agriculture, Global Health and Medical Science, and Social Innovation Science, which are the main research fields of Society 5.0. They are primarily characterized by interdisciplinary education and research based on integrated education in which multiple research fields are integrated and collaborate with each other in a flexible and cross-disciplinary way. We shall nurture human resources who are practical and can work in the field, as well as those that are internationally-minded, and who, while having advanced specialization in their fields, such as mobility, energy, food, health, environment, and public policy, can fully utilize digital infrastructure, including data science, artificial intelligence, and robotics engineering, to design, develop, and implement advanced technologies, systems, and institutions that directly address a wide variety of social issues, to face global and local communities in a way that transcends the boundaries of research fields.

My specialty is sensing engineering, but I am keenly aware that measurement activities at the research level in the lab are significantly different from measurement at the practical level in the field. In a manner distinct from lab-based education and research, which tends towards Galápagosization, the graduate school aims to become a practical smart society education and research center where field sites and digital social infrastructures are integrated in a human-centric manner.

All faculty and staff members will join forces in a cross-disciplinary manner to advance our research and education, and we humbly ask for your support and cooperation in this endeavor.
