For over 140 years, Hiroshima University, originally established under the name Hakushima School in 1874, has produced many talented professionals that have gone on to make great contributions not only to Hiroshima but also towards the development of Japan. In 2024, HU will mark two important milestones, its 75th anniversary as Hiroshima University and its 150th anniversary since the establishment of the school.
Despite going through many big changes, such as the merging and relocation of campuses to Higashihiroshima in 1981 and a transition to corporate status in 2004, HU has repeatedly overcome such challenges and continues to grow steadily to this day.
As for recent achievements, HU was selected as part of the “Program for Promoting the Enhancement of Research Universities” by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in 2013. In 2014, HU was again selected by MEXT for the “Top Global University Project” as a “Type A” University – which deems HU as one of the top 13 universities in Japan. As a university which we believe has the potential to belong to the top 100 universities globally, we have high expectations that our university will advance as a global institution.
To meet those expectations, HU developed a long-term vision, known as “SPLENDOR PLAN 2017” (Sustainable Peace Leader Enhancement by Nurturing Development of Research ). Since its development, HU has made every effort to realize its long-term vision of becoming a “University of World-wide Repute and Splendor for Years into the Future”.
At the time of commemorating the “75 + 75 anniversary” of the university, we established a new fund called “The fund for uplifting Hiroshima University and energizing the local communities of Hiroshima”. The aim of this fund is to create an ideal condition for HU to play a more active role in society and to enhance collaboration with the local community and businesses. Therefore, in order to become a world-leading university we are accepting donations which will help us carry out the objectives as stated below.
1. Establish a base that aims to build more sophisticated collaboration with local communities and businesses with the Center of KANSEI Innovation Nurturing Mental Wealth (KANSEI COI Base) as its center
2. Establish a base for education, research and social contributions on peace with the Center for Peace as its center
3. Establish a base for exchange between researchers and businesses that allows world-leading researchers to advance societal implementation of their research results
By fulfilling the missions stated above, HU will become more actively involved in society. We wish for people in Hiroshima to make full use of HU, enhancing the communication between HU, businesses, communities and the local region while giving more opportunities for young people to be active in society, leading to a revitalization of Hiroshima.
