Message from the Dean

Nurturing Future Healthcare Professionals from HIROSHIMA to the World

The Hiroshima University School of Medicine consists of the School of Medicine, which educates future physicians, and the School of Health Sciences, which trains healthcare professionals such as nurses, physical therapists, and occupational therapists. Together, these programs provide an educational and research environment dedicated to developing diverse healthcare professionals who contribute to human health and the understanding of disease. The opportunity for students in medicine and health sciences to learn within the same faculty is one of the distinctive features of our school and forms an important foundation for collaborative, team-based healthcare in the future.

Located in Hiroshima, a city with a unique historical background, Hiroshima University has long reflected on the values of human life, health, and peace. These values continue to be an integral part of the education and research carried out in our School of Medicine.

Medicine and healthcare continue to advance rapidly. In addition to the growing importance of community healthcare in an aging society, new technologies such as genomic medicine, regenerative medicine, artificial intelligence, and data science are transforming the future of healthcare. In response to these developments, our School of Medicine promotes a wide range of research activities from basic science to clinical medicine, while striving to educate healthcare professionals who can contribute to both local communities and the global medical community.

In medical education, we believe it is essential not only to acquire knowledge and technical skills but also to cultivate the ability to empathize with patients. We are committed to creating an educational environment in which students learn from patients and communities, think independently, and grow as compassionate healthcare professionals.

Medicine is a discipline that supports people and learns from people. We sincerely hope that everyone who studies, conducts research, and practices medicine at Hiroshima University will take pride in their experience here and go on to contribute to society—from Hiroshima to Japan and to the world.

Dean, School of Medicine
