On October 21, 2026, Hiroshima University and Jönköping University in Sweden jointly held a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) session for students from both universities.
COIL is a virtual exchange approach in higher education that connects educators and students from different geographical and cultural backgrounds. It enables students to share experiences and knowledge around a common topic with peers in other countries, fostering intercultural competence and an appreciation of diversity.
A total of 185 students from the Nursing and Oral Health Sciences programs at the two universities participated in the session. The students were divided into 16 groups for online discussions and exchange of ideas.
The session focused on "Children’s Rights," based on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Students presented and discussed topics such as the best interests of the child, children’s right to express their views, and non-discrimination, exploring how these principles can be applied in nursing practice and dental care settings.
Faculty members from both universities participated as facilitators, supporting group discussions. By exchanging perspectives across countries and professional disciplines, students had a valuable opportunity to deepen their understanding of the importance of respecting children’s rights.
This initiative not only promoted international exchange among students but also provided an opportunity to strengthen academic collaboration among faculty members at both universities. Further development of international educational cooperation between the two universities is anticipated.
