Introduction

The Hiroshima University Faculty of Dentistry (HUFD), which was founded in 1965, has been continuously challenged by the many changes in providing quality dental education and research. As often discussed, the dental care environment and the corresponding roles of the National University have changed dramatically from the last half of the 20th century to the 21st century. In Hiroshima University, the circumstances around the Faculty of Dentistry have also undergone significant changes with the establishment of the graduate school of biomedical sciences, and the integration of University Dental Hospital with the University Medical Hospital. Also, Hiroshima University and other National Universities have been turned into independent administrative entities since the last academic year.
Under these situations, HUFD established the course system consisting of two independent courses, the Frontier Dental Science Course and the Clinical Dental Science Course (in 2000) in order to provide an innovative education system based on basic dental sciences. Moreover, the School of Oral Health Science, which has a four-year program for Oral Health Hygiene and Oral Health Engineering, was founded in 2005. We are currently planning to introduce a higher education program (post-doctoral course) to supplement the four-year programs in order to establish a more comprehensive and advanced research institute in Dentistry.
Because of the intense competitive environment surrounding dental education and science, HUFD has invited worldwide prominent educators and researchers to lecture on recent innovations in dental education as well as the medical and dental sciences. Special emphasis has been provided at the conference for the integration of advanced engineering technologies with the nursing system into the world of sophisticated dental research
We are looking forward to having you join us in Hiroshima.
