Introduction

It is my great pleasure and honor to welcome you to 4th Hiroshima Conference on Education and Science in  Dentistry on October 9 and 10, 2011.

Let me start by mentioning that 2011 will be an unforgettable year. We wish to express our sincerest condolence to the victims of Tohoku-Pacific Ocean Earthquake and heartfelt sympathy to the people who are still forced to flee from Tsunami damage and nuclear accident. In this tragedy, we received heartfelt sympathy from many of our sister schools who join this 4th Hiroshima Conference. I deeply appreciate warm thoughts and expression of condolence and consolation from you. With your kindest support, Japan will confront this challenge and regenerate being proud of spirit of tolerance and respect of Japanese people.

We held 1st Hiroshima Conference on Education and Science in Dentistry to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Faculty of Dentistry in January 2006. The 2nd and 3rd Hiroshima Conference was held in 2007 and in 2009, respectively and we renewed our friendship and collaboration exchanging the latest research findings and educational challenges. We convened Dean’s network meeting during these Hiroshima Conference. We started to know each other from 9 dental schools at 1st Hiroshima Conference. At the 3rd Hiroshima Conference, we discussed more substantive collaboration of educational programs and research projects among 17 Deans. As one of the fruits, we will start international dental program at the undergraduate level among Airlangga University, Ho Chi Minh City Medical and Pharmacy University and Hiroshima University. We would like to expand the circle of mutual accreditation in dental education and develop project-based international research among the dental schools gathering at Hiroshima Conference.

The 4th Hiroshima Conference will be held in conjunction with 59th Annual Meeting of Japanese Association for Dental Research (JADR, Japanese Division of IADR) and Seminar of “Research Aiming for Improved QOL through Oral Health”. It is my privilege to inform you the happiest news that our friend Professor Martha Somerman, Dean of the University of Washington School of Dentistry, has been appointed as director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) on August 29, 2011. Congratulations on her new position! She will talk on the new direction of dental medicine and sciences at the Conference.

I wish 4th Hiroshima Conference will be a rewarding meeting for all participants and provide an opportunity to develop mutual understanding and collaboration among schools.

October 9, 2011.
