10th International Summer School in Biosphere Science

The 10th International Summer School in Biosphere Science was held from July 26 to August 1, 2017, aiming to share up-to-date scientific knowledge and techniques in the biosphere sciences with students and young academic staffs from MOU universities and partner universities of our graduate school.

This year, a total of 11 students or young academic staffs joined from Pukyong National University (South Korea), Chonnam National University (South Korea), Tunghai University (Taiwan), Airlangga University (Indonesia), Gadjah Mada University (Indonesia), Bogor Agricultural University (Indonesia), Nong Lam University (Viet Nam), Khon Kean University (Thailand), University of the Philippines Visayas (Philippines), Visayas State University (Philippines) and University of Peradeniya (Sri Lanka).

On the morning of the first day, July 26, a welcome ceremony was conducted after the orientation. The ceremony had 36 participants including Dr. Jou-Hsuan Ho from Tunghai University in Taiwan as a guest.

In the afternoon, they visited some laboratories of the Graduate School of Biosphere Science and professors introduced their research.

After visiting laboratories, an international exchange reception party hosted by HU students was held. The participants made a presentation regarding their countries and universities at the party and promoted international friendship with HU students.

For the following two days, they selected and joined one of the scientific program works (Fisheries and Marine Biology, Animal Science, Food Chemistry and Nutrition, Applied Molecular Biology), learning and experiencing cutting-edge knowledge and techniques in related scientific fields with the help of Japanese student assistants.

On July 29, a study tour to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Hiroshima Prefecture (Atomic-bomb dome in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Itsukushima shrine in Miyajima Island) was conducted to learn about Hiroshima’s elegant and tough history.

On July 31, study tour to Otafuku Sauce Co., Ltd in Hiroshima City was conducted.
Otafuku Sauce Co., Ltd is the top company manufacturing and selling of sauce used for Japanese traditional food ‘Okonomiyaki’. They visited the sauce factory and observed the most advanced technology for sauce production. Then, they had an experience of Okonomiyaki making at this special facility in the Wood Egg Okonomiyaki Building. They enjoyed Hiroshima's local dish very much.

On the final day, August 1, they visited Stake Corporation in Higashi-Hiroshima City, which is a leading company for manufacturing grain processing machineries, and observed the most advanced technology for their production.

In the afternoon, the information session was organized to provide admission information. In the session, two international students of our graduate school and a researcher of Hiroshima University talked about their experience of studying and campus life at Hiroshima University.

After the information session, a farewell ceremony was conducted, and a certification was handed to the participants by the Dean.

Finally, the summer school was closed by the Farewell Party at the modern university cafeteria "la place" and the participants left Japan for their country with lots of memories at Hiroshima University.

*This summer school is a good opportunity for me to get information about Hiroshima University. Thank you for inviting me here. At the first time, I thought it would be hard to follow the program because I am not a talkative person. But by all the event arranged in this program, I could get a lot of experiences and make friends with all the participants and Japanese students. (Indonesia)
