Details

Dr. Ajith Balasooriya has been a Senior Lecturer at the Department of International Relations, University of Colombo, since 2009. He obtained his postgraduate qualifications from the Graduate School of International Development and Cooperation (IDEC) at Hiroshima University in Japan.
He has been teaching for both undergraduate and postgraduate at the department on conflict resolution and peace.

He is the coordinator of the General Degree/Study Stream on Conflict Resolution and Peace, which was newly introduced in the Department of International Relations in 2015. In addition, Dr. Balasooriya served as the Director of Studies in the Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo, from August 2017 to July 2018. He was awarded as a Visiting Research Scholar 2020/2021 by the Asian Universities Alliance (AUA) to carry out a collaborative research activity on Human Security at the University of Yangon in Myanmar in 2020.

International Peace and Co-existence Program

This cross-disciplinary program aims to consolidate students’ basic knowledge and to enhance their critical thinking skills in the academic disciplines of Peace Studies, Cultural Anthropology, International Relations, Law, Ethics, Area Studies, and Memory Studies under the common key concept of “Peace and Co-existence.”

Students can choose a subject area and a specific topic to conduct independent research, with guidance from the academic staff who specialize in a variety of research fields, including nuclear damage, armed conflict, and the interrelations between development and culture. Other research interests include social inequalities stemming from issues of poverty, gender, ethnicity and religion as well as war and ethics, and security and nuclear weapons.
