About the Lecture
Medical populism calls attention to a recurring repertoire of political styles during health crises, including the simplification of complex issues, the spectacularization of government responses, and the forging of divisions between the public and perceived dangerous, contagious “others”. This presentation introduces the framework of medical populism and uses it to make sense of contemporary developments in global health, from the Trump administration’s health policies to the pursuit of Universal Health Care (UHC) by different countries in Southeast Asia.
About the Speaker
Gideon Lasco is a professorial lecturer in anthropology at the University of the Philippines and a Takemi Fellow for International Health at Harvard School of Public Health.
